Frequently Asked Questions

  • 2D is the traditional black and white ultrasound image that you will typically receive at your doctor's appointment.

3D images show much greater detail of the baby's facial features. (Bronze in color)

4D shows movement — yawns, smiles, kicks, sucking on fingers, etc. — in 3D imaging

5D/HD shows even more detail and a richer color. (Pinkish/skin tone in color)

  • Unlike X-rays, ultrasounds do not involve radiation. 3D and 4D ultrasound use the same frequency as your doctor uses in the normal 2D ultrasound. Extensive studies over the last 35 years have found no evidence that ultrasounds cause any harm to mother or the developing baby.

  • ABSOLUTELY NOT!! Your imaging session is strictly an elective ultrasound. Any woman seeking an ultrasound at Silo Imaging Studio must be under the care of a doctor for her current pregnancy and needs to have previously undergone a medical, diagnostic ultrasound to confirm the due date, screen for fetal abnormalities and to look for any other pregnancy related concerns. Please note, at no time is this exam to be used in place of a complete diagnostic ultrasound.

  • You may schedule an elective ultrasound at Silo Imaging Studio any time after 10 weeks. However, the timing of your ultrasound will depend on what you're hoping to get out of the experience. Many mamas like coming at least twice -- once early on, between 15-25 weeks (when you can see baby as a whole) and then again between 28-34 weeks to see more facial details. Starting around 28 weeks, baby starts to develop more fat and gets a more defined face. If you are hoping to see those adorable chunky cheeks, it is recommended to schedule between 28-34 weeks. After 34 weeks, it generally becomes more difficult to obtain good pictures since baby is running out of room. However, all babies are different, and it may still be possible to obtain great images all the way up to 39 weeks!

    • Best time for gender determination: 14+ weeks

    • Best time for face images: 27–34 weeks
Earlier or later scans are welcome but image quality — specifically for 3D and HD — may vary.

  • Usually, but not always. Every mama, baby and pregnancy scans differently. Babies have a mind of their own and therefore, we cannot always guarantee cooperation. Sometimes if baby is facing down (i.e. towards your spine) it may be difficult to see their face. Other factors that can influence the images include how far along you are, baby's position, amount of amniotic fluid, and mother’s condition. Every effort is made to obtain the best possible images of your little one.

  • Yes, if you are 14+ weeks! At Silo Imaging Studio, we prioritize both your experience and your baby’s safety. While many parents are excited to hear their baby’s heartbeat during their visit, we follow the ALARA principle (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) when it comes to ultrasound exposure.

Due to these medical safety recommendations, we do not use pulsed-wave Doppler/audio to hear the heartbeat before 14 weeks gestation.

    Why?

    • Early fetal development is delicate. Using Doppler technology to hear the heartbeat before 14 weeks may expose the baby to unnecessary ultrasound energy.

    • We always prioritize your baby’s health. By waiting until after 14 weeks, we ensure that we are aligning with industry best practices for prenatal care and ultrasound safety.

Before 14 weeks, we can still see the flicker of the heartbeat on the screen and show the waveform — a magical moment in itself!

  • Congratulations! What a blessing!! There is a small up charge of $25 for twins added on to your total package price at checkout. Best images of twins are usually obtained around 22-27 weeks because they aren't as crowded at this time.

  • If you are less than 14 weeks, yes, please arrive with a full bladder.

  • Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Maintaining a healthy fluid intake is so important, especially while you are pregnant. Drink a minimum of 64 ounces of water every day for at least 3-4 days leading up to your appointment. Doing so will help obtain optimal amniotic fluid levels for your ultrasound. It is also recommended to have a light snack about 20 minutes before your appointment.

  • Yes! In fact, having family and friends join you during your ultrasound session is encouraged!

Children are allowed ONLY if accompanied by an adult aged 18 or older, other than the client who is being scanned, who can supervise them for the duration of your appointment. This policy ensures you can fully enjoy your ultrasound and bond with your little one, while also protecting the studio from any potential damage.

This is a joyous and wonderful experience, one that can and should be shared with your family and loved ones!

  • At Silo Imaging Studio, my goal is to capture beautiful, high-quality images of your baby. However, there are times when factors such as baby’s position, low fluid levels, or placenta placement may make it difficult to get a clear view of the baby’s face.

If we are unable to obtain facial images during your session, we may offer a rescan within 7–10 days, at the discretion of the sonographer. This allows time for your baby to potentially move into a better position for imaging.

Rescans are not guaranteed and are only offered based on individual circumstances. I’ll always do my best to ensure you have a memorable and enjoyable experience.

  • Currently, insurance does not cover the costs of elective ultrasounds. Since this is an elective service and is not intended to be a replacement for your doctor ordered ultrasound, you will need to pay for the cost of this ultrasound as an out-of-pocket expense. We accept both cash and credit cards.

  • Yes, appointments are required for all services.

  • American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography® (ARDMS®) is a nationally recognized organization that has been providing award credentials in Sonography since 1975. ARDMS-certified sonography professionals meet rigorous criteria in both knowledge and expertise in Sonography. Having a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) ensures quality and safety for you and your baby during your ultrasound scan.

To achieve and maintain the RDMS status, the following are required:

    • A minimum of 2 years Undergraduate Degree

    • A minimum of 1 year proven clinical skills

    • Two Board Examinations administered by ARDMS® must be passed:

    - Sonography Principles & Instrumentation (SPI) Exam

    - Specialty exam such as Obstetrics and Gynecology.

    • Must maintain Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits that are approved by ARDMS®.

ARDMS credentials are recognized as the top standard throughout the medical community. In most areas of the U.S. there are no restrictions on who can perform elective ultrasounds. This means that anyone can purchase an ultrasound machine and perform an elective ultrasound without proper education and training.

Many other elective imaging centers may claim that the individuals performing the ultrasounds have been "trained" or are "certified" -- in most cases, these individuals are not registered with the ARDMS. To ensure you are receiving the highest level of care, ask if the person performing your sonography examination has been certified by ARDMS.

  • Please be sure to drink plenty of water starting at least 4 days prior to your appointment.

Appointments must be cancelled or rescheduled at least 24 hours prior to your appointment.

It is required that all mothers have documentation of their medical, diagnostic ultrasound. Although your ultrasound at Silo Imaging Studio is NOT a medical ultrasound, if I am suspicious of a possible abnormality, your doctor will be notified.

For the safety of myself, my family and all customers and families, I ask that you reschedule if you are sick. Please do not bring anyone with you if they are sick. Thank you so much for understanding! Please feel free to contact me with any additional questions/concerns.
